Hurricane Katrina

I always wondered why they gave such nice names to hurricanes. As though it makes them less catastrophic. It would seem that way in Bush's eyes, anyway. Uncle Bob captures just how disastrous this whole thing is, and it pains me to know that it could've been prevented. Not the storm, of course, but the effects of the storm. Had the Army Corps of Engineers been given the amount of funding they needed, instead of having it cut to one sixth of what they needed in order to pay for the war in Iraq, they would have been able to raise the levees enough that New Orleans wouldn't be drowned. It's just so sad. People in our own country are starving and without clean water and without power, stranded on the roofs of their houses, and it could have been prevented. Where are all the helicopters? Why are there no National Guardsman here, doing what they're supposed to do? They're meant to help with national disasters such as this, but where are they? In Iraq.

Billions are being spent on "building democracy in Iraq," and yet our own country is falling apart. Explain that one.

Anyway, my best thoughts go out to all those suffering. I can't even begin to imagine how traumatizing that kind of catastrophe is.
